VeriFone Secures Card Data at Petroleum Retailers

Date: 12/06/2008

VeriFone is offering gas station retailers an encryption system that will secure customer card data against network breaches.

VeriFone’s VeriShield Protect product, announced in April 2008, encrypts the personal account number (PAN) and magnetic-stripe track data of a bank card so that it can be transmitted safely over a retailer’s network.

Now VeriShield is to be made available for VeriFone’s Secure PumpPAY product (www.securepumppay.com), a hardware and software upgrade to retrofit gas station pay-at-pump systems to Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards.

Existing fuel dispensers must comply with PCI standards by July 1, 2010, and new fuel dispensers must be PCI-compliant by January 1, 2009.

Secure PumpPAY works with pumps manufactured by virtually all U.S. and most European suppliers, VeriFone says. It includes a PCI-compliant electronic PIN pad and secure magnetic-stripe reader.

With the addition of VeriShield Protect, card data is secured not only at the pump but also on the retailer network, VeriFone says.

VeriShield Protect is currently available on VeriFone’s MX800 Series platform, and will be available on its Secure PumpPAY and Vx systems later in 2008.
