UEA wins prestigious RFID award

Date: 28/12/2007

Intellident recently announce that at the recent CILIP RFID in Libraries conference (held on 13th November in London) the University of East Anglia was announced as the winner of the inaugural BIC/CILIP RFID in Libraries Award.

With a collection of more than 700,000 items, UEA is the largest academic library in the UK to deploy RFID technology. UEA Library staff worked closely with Intellident Library Solutions to develop a robust, user-focused system.

The award was presented to Nicholas Lewis, UEA's Head of Library Collections, at an awards ceremony in London on November 13.

Kitty Inglis, Acting Librarian at UEA, was delighted that the Library had been recognised with this award:

"The project team, ably led by Nick, and staff in our User Services Department have worked together to introduce innovative, customer focussed issue and returns services that take advantage of emerging technology and offer significant benefits to end users."

The innovative advantages of the self-returns system include:

Immediate removal of items from a borrower's record, allowing them to borrow other items without delay.

Automated sorting of items, cutting down on the work required to re-shelve materials, meaning items get back to the shelves quicker.

Proof of return via a receipt, reassuring borrowers and cutting down on the number of 'claimed returns' dealt with each year.

The entire collection was RFID-enabled in just one summer using an efficient and innovative process. The use of hand-held scanners in the tagging procedure allowed work to be carried out at the shelves, resulting in minimal interruption to normal library service and no moving of stock during implementation.

The returns sorter continues to generate significant interest across public and academic sectors and UEA has hosted several visits from other higher education and public libraries.
