The Visually Impaired Can Now Independently Perform Secure Web and Telephone Banking

Date: 21/07/2008

The Slovenian company Activa System and the Slovenian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (ZDSSS), have introduced a specially adapted portable smart card reader that the blind and visually impaired will be able to use for secure authentication in web and telephone banking, and in online shopping.

The special reader operates with the help of “Chip-to-Speech” technology developed specifically for persons with special needs. It is equipped with an adapted keypad that has larger and characteristic keys, a larger graphic display and an integrated sound interface transmitting all messages displayed on the reader through earphones.

“All users of the adapted reader can pay online by using the 3D Secure system, and they can now also use e-banking services provided by Banka Koper, Poštna banka Slovenije, Deželna banka Slovenije and Volksbank – Ljudska banka,” said Gojmir Nabergoj, a business consultant at Activa. “This expanded access to financial services ensures a more equal social integration for the blind and visually impaired and at the same time resolves some of their everyday difficulties, allowing them to use a number of services remotely and independently.”

“This is a first in the use of portable smart card readers giving access to the blind and visually impaired, and at the same time gives them the convenience and security of the MasterCardŸChip Authentication Program™(CAP) just like in any other Chip and PIN operation”, pointed out Toni Merschen, Group Head Chip at MasterCard Worldwide.

“We are glad to offer our Xi-Sign 4400 as an adapted authentication solution to Slovenian users. XIRING has developed a complete range of solutions for all user groups. The visually impaired can now be equipped with an ergonomically adapted solution, allowing them to benefit from all services. Internet security is a universal requirement and we have to work alongside banks to provide all their customers with well-suited solutions. In doing this, we comply with our United Nations Global Compact commitment.” Comments Georges Liberman, Chairman and CEO, XIRING.
