T=0

A communication protocol between a smart card and a smart card reader thatt ransfers information one byte at a time; a byte-oriented smart card communication protocol.

T=1

A communication protocol between a smart card and a smart card reader that transfers information in a block or blocks of multiple bytes; a block-oriented smart card communication protocol.

TA

Type Approval. A process of control over the terminal miniaturization, in order to maintain the interoperability of cards based upon the card brand specification

TAB

Tape Automated Bonding. One of the methods for mounting the chip on the carrier film in a chip module. The other method is Wire Bond Technique.

Tag

This terms is now broadly used to designate unsupplied (induction-supplied energy) electronic tags or radofrequencies (smart label), which should be distinguished from supplied electronic tags equipped with an LCD display, used in some stores. Tags can be in the form of a token, flexible film or smart card. It is noteworthy that self-supplied tags have recently appeared, using a film battery.

Tamper Detection

Capabilities of a smart card such as low voltage or slow clock detection circuits that enable the card to detect an attempted, unauthorized access to data it contains or an attempt to alter the calculations it performs.

Tamper Evident

Physical aspects of a smart card that, when altered, will not return to their unaltered state and thus will show that the card has been tampered with.

Tamper Resistant

Properties of a smart card—both in hardware and software—that make it difficult to perform unauthorized alterations of the data stored in the smart card or to make the smart card perform unauthorized computations.

Tamper Response

Actions such as zeroization taken by a smart card when tampering is detected.

TAN

Transaction Number. Valid for only one transaction, which means that it can be used only once. Normally, the user receives several TANs printed on a slip of paper (as four-digit numbers, for example), and these must be used exactly in the prescribed order for a set of individual transactions or a series of sessions.

TC

Transaction Certificate: A cryptogram, generated by the chip card that can be used as proof that card approved the transaction and that the data sent to clearing relates to the transaction.

TCP/IP

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

TCPA

Trusted Computer Platform Alliance. An initiative led by Intel to build a computing platform with built-in security functions, notably for DRM and copyright enforcement.

TCSEC

Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria. A system that employs sufficient hardware and software assurance measures to allow its use for simultaneous processing of a range of sensitive or classified information.

TDES

Triple Data Encryption Standard.

TDMA

Time Division Multiple Access. A second-generation technology for digital transmission of radio signals. It is the underlying technology for GSM digital cellular networks. See CDMA, GSM

TE

terminal equipment. Another name for a smart card reader.

Tear

Tear. To remove a smart card from the smart card reader in the middle of a transaction; may leave the data on the smart card in an inconsistent or incorrect state.

TELCO

Telephone Company

Term Rule-Based Security Policy:

Term Rule-Based Security Policy:A security policy based on global rules imposed for all users. These rules usually rely on a comparison of the sensitivity of the resources being accessed and the possession of corresponding attributes of users, a group of users, or entities acting on behalf of users.

Terminal

Complement to a smart card. It is a processing device that enables power supply and data exchange with smart cards. Some terminals have displays and keypads.

TESA-7

A cryptographic algorithm used in GSM telephony.

TLS

Transport layer Security

TLV (tag length value)

A way of formatting arbitrary data for transmission between a smart card and a host application.

TPDU

Transmission Protocol Data Unit. A block of data sent from the smart card to the host application.

Track

A defined part on a magnetic stripe where data can be written

Transaction

A business or payment event for the exchange of value for goods or services.

Transaction Time

The amount of time between the start and finish of a transaction.

Transparent File

A type of file organization. The EEPROM file contains a byte string. Data is accessed using the offset length relative to the first byte within the byte string.

Transponder

An electronic transmitter that is able to transfer data to a reader by means of a radio frequency signal.

Transportation Key or Transport Key

A key that prevents data being written into a smart card NVM when it is being transported from the chip manufacturer to the card manufacturer or from the card manufacturer to the card issuer.
