Oberthur Technologies Releases Motion Detection SIM Card

Date: 25/02/2009

Oberthur Technologies, a provider of Smart Card-based solutions, has unveiled SIMSense, a motion detection and handset-independent SIM card.

The company claims that this patent-pending SIM card will bring new opportunities to mobile network operators and more convenience to their customers that will lead to a new era in SIM interaction.

"Through SIMSense, Oberthur Technologies demonstrates the power of SIM technology. I'm convinced that this innovative motion detection SIM card can significantly enrich customer experience, using any mobile phone and facilitate introduction of voice / SMS value added services by mobile operators," said Xavier Drilhon, managing director, card systems division at Oberthur Technologies, in a statement.

According to company officials, the possible applications of SIMSense are based on incorporating accelerometers and temperature captors that enable motion detection.

With the help of SIMSense, mobile network operators will be able to offer services that improve the way people manage their daily lives.

Users can access a new range of services by simply tapping or shaking their mobile phone. In addition, when a user is busy, they can inform people by simply shaking or tapping their handset which will send a predetermined text message.

Moreover, a user can locate the services and applications menu just by shaking or tapping the handset. In an emergency, if the handset is close to the human body, the smart application is able to send a predetermined text message to a set point of contact, such as relatives or dial for an ambulance.

Oberthur Technologies also recently announced its enhanced SIM-based two-factor authentication offer for secure online services in partnership with XIRING, a provider of card based strong authentication solutions for e-banking and e-commerce payments.
