NFC - Near Field Communication

NFC is a wireless transfer technology that works over short distances (i.e., a few centimeters) and allows communication between electronic devices. Data exchange is possible when two NFC-compatible devices are brought into close proximity with each other or actually touch.

NACCU

National Association of Campus Card Users. A North American smart card industry group. For more information, go to www.naccu.org

Navigation Pane

The pane in the Smartcard Console that lists major categories of tasks that are involved in setting up smart cards.

NCSC:

See National Computer Security Center.

NDEF

NFC Data Exchange Format

Network Based:

Network traffic data along with audit data from the hosts used to detect intrusions.

Network Level Firewall:

A firewall in which traffic is examined at the network protocol (IP) packet level.

NFIQ

NIST Fingerprint Image Quality (fingerprint matching system)

NGO's

Non-governmental organisations

NHIS

National Health Information System (NHIS).

NIC

National Insurance Contributions

NIM

Net-user Identifier Module. The Global Chip-card Alliance's NIM project is a collaborative effort by member organisations to design a single application that will enable smart card terminals worldwide to identify and grant access to "foreign" application providers.

NIST

National Institute for Standards and Technology.
An American standards body particularly for the use of information-processing technology by the Federal government. For more information, go to www.nist.gov.

Non-Repudiation

Guarantee that the recipient of a message cannot deny the content of a message resp. of having sent a message.

Non-Volatile

Said of memory chips that retain their contents even without power.

Non-Repudiation

The interface between the CPU and memory, and the interface between the CPU and Input/Output busses.

NVM

nonvolatile memory.
A generic term for the memory in a smart card that can be written but still holds its contents after power has been removed; PROM, EPROM, EEPROM, FLASH, and FRAM are examples of NVM.
