Reno residents will have the chance to test three different types of parking meters over the next several weeks, as city officials conduct a study to replace the current meters.

The study is being conducted to choose a system that will allow motorists to use alternate methods of payment, City of Reno spokesperson Michele Anderson said. The study will also look at which system provides the best ease of use, reliability and economical sensibility, Anderson said.

The meters that will be part of the study are being provided by the vendors at no cost to the city.

The three types of meters and their locations are as follows:

* Single Space Meters with Smart Card by Mackay Meters are located in the area of Reno City Hall. This system uses a Smart Card system that can be reloaded as the amount on the card lessens. Reloading the amount on the cards can be done by the reloading kiosk in front of City Hall or at the City Clerks office. In addition to the smart cards, the system allows for coins to be accepted at the meter. Smart Cards may be purchased by the public at the City Clerks Office, located on the 2nd floor of City Hall.

* Multi-Space Meters by Secure Storage Technologies are located on Ryland Street by the Washoe County Library. This system uses a central kiosk and vehicle detection to meter multiple spaces, and allows for future bicycle parking meter integration.

* Pay and Display by Cale Access are located west of Wingfield Park. This system is similar to a multi-space meter; however the customer must return to their vehicle to display a ticket, showing proof of payment in lieu of vehicle detection.

Upon completion of the pilot study, city staff will present the results of the study and the citizen survey to the Reno City Council, and seek direction on how to move forward, Anderson said.
